Day 55 — Hot and Windy

Mileage:

From Elko, NV

To: Battle Mountain, NV

We tried to get an early start around 7 am but we had some bike issues early on.  Dan damaged his valve while pumping his tire up and had to replace the tube.  We hit the road and then I realized that my rear break was rubbing.  We had to take everything off my bike to make sure that the wheel was sitting ride on the frame.  We finally got going and we had extremely favorable conditions early on.  In fact we made it to Carlin in about an hour and were averaging just under 20 mph.  We took a break here as this was the only town on the way to Battle Mountain.  After Carlin, we started our climb over the final pass before the Sierra Nevadas.  It was a relatively easy pass as it was an average grade and only about a 1500 foot climb.

At the Top of Emigrant Pass

The ride down was nice and we stopped at the rest stop near the base on the west side.  We refilled water and waited out a thunderstorm prior to proceeding.  We have hit more thunderstorms in the state of Nevada than any other state.  The only difference is that these storms last about 10-15 minutes instead of hours.  We continued to have favorable conditions until about 5 miles past the rest stop.  We all of a sudden were hit by very strong headwinds the rest of the way.  It was almost 100 degrees and it was slow going.  We finally reached town and immediately got food and liquids.  We got a motel for the evening as there are no RV parks or campgrounds in Battle Mountain.  With how hot it is right now, it is probably for the best anyway.

** I have gone back and added in the photos from day 48 to the present. **
